DEPTHS
Depths is a series in which painting is constructed through layers of color applied to a flat surface, evoking immersion in the sea.
Carmen Carbonell works through glazing and the superimposition of pigments, generating chromatic fields in which color acquires optical depth.
The series draws on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, exploring their chromatic variations and the different qualities of their waters, between transparency and density, light and movement.
The painting is articulated as a process of pictorial accumulation, in which the different layers of color construct a perception of depth without resorting to the materiality of relief.
Macro photography introduces a shift in scale, fragmenting the surface and revealing the internal structures of color, expanding the image and moving painting toward a landscape condition of detail.
